You shall die in your sins – What it means.

What did Jesus mean by this phrase- “you will die in your sins”?

Joh 8:21  Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come.”
Joh 8:22  So the Jews said, “Will He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you cannot come’?”
Joh 8:23  And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.
Joh 8:24  Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

The Meanings of Jesus words are interpreted by the Holy Spirit through Paul’s gospel which He received from Jesus in the spirit. The definitions of words and phrases and ideas found in Jesus teaching are expanded upon and clarified by Paul the Apostle to the Gentile church.

Thus what is sin and sins first of all?

Sins and sin in John 8 and elsewhere are from the Greek hamartia(G266) and hamartano(G264) which in that day were archery terms meaning to MISS THE MARK or to fall short.

What mark is that? What are we to aim at?

Rom 3:23  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

All have harmatia–all have missed the mark..missed the target of the glory of God- which is being like God. We all fall short. This is what harmatia means.

Translating that word into English in the 15th and 16th centuries with the word “sin” is not entirely accurate, it is a distortion of the true meaning and hides something wonderful from us. When we read “all have sinned” in Paul’s gospel presentation we always think in terms of breaking God’s Mosaic laws. Of course that is true….but Paul boasted that ‘according to the Law he was blameless’ prior to trusting in Jesus.(Philippians 3:6) Sin or HARMATIA IS not just the breaking of God’s laws or being guilty of doing so…no, that is only a symptom of what HARMATIA really is.

Harmatia is a missing the mark of the glory of God –or a not sharing in the glory of God

Harmatia is the unbelief that says you are not sharing the glory of God. Harmatia refuses to accept the truth that God has reconciled you to Himself so that you are one spirit with Him. Harmatia holds God at arms length and refuses to believe that God is responsible to do the work of living.

Harmatia says “I can of mine own self live a good upstanding life before men and God”

Though people are busy being good, trying to keep laws etc…unless they believe into Jesus they shall die in their missing the mark.

They shall die in the DELUSION of separation that they have imagined that they live in. They don’t!

Man is not a separate entity responsible and able to live a good or bad life. Man is made to contain another person’s “life”. Man is made to be one spirit with Jesus Christ! Jesus wanted them to HIT THE MARK!!

To hit the mark we must BELIEVE INTO JESUS —for then Jesus comes into us! And in coming into us, we are symmorphosed together with Him–Paul’s word from Roman’s 8:29 —conformed to the image of His Son.

Symmorphosed means two people sharing the same form

You and Jesus sharing the same form…your body and soul and spirit….all intertwined as one with Jesus Christ.

This is HITTING THE MARK--This is sharing in the glory of God..a partaker of the divine nature!

And if you do not believe into Jesus but rather stay defiantly in your delusion that  you are sufficient of yourself to please God, then you consign yourself to DEATH–ie- separation from God!

You shall die in your MISSING THE MARK. Missing the mark, falling short, is the human trying to be like God….without having God in His heart.

Once you have God-Jesus Christ in your heart through faith, you are hitting the mark ALWAYS…for it is His righteousness we stand inside of not our own.

It is not that you may have lied or gotten drunk or whatever….THE MAIN problem is that of UNBELIEF.

We believe in Jesus and HE COMES INTO US by His Spirit to be the glory of God….for He prayed that the same glory He had would be ours. He prayed that where I am, they would be also….Where is that? In Father’s heart!! Where is the glory…IN FATHER GOD’S HEART in your heart!!

Joh 17:22  And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:
Joh 17:23  I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
Joh 17:24  “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Dying in your sins….is to dwell in the imagined condition of being separate from God. What separates us from God? UNBELIEF.

Why don’t people believe in Jesus? They do not think they NEED HIM. They are self sufficient–THEIR OWN GOD.

But this is a delusion of course. They are empty vessels in need of God’s spirit, for without Him we can do nothing.

Paul was blameless according to the law(Ph3:6)….but only in man’s eyes. Perfect obedience to law never justifies anyone before God. Only faith in Jesus justifies us…and that faith is given to us by God so that no one can boast in themselves that they believe in Jesus.

To be self righteous is to be ALWAYS MISSING THE MARK….ALWAYS FALLING SHORT…even though it appears you are very righteous.

God wants us to fall silent about our achievements before Him and to acknowledge our need of the Saviour–Jesus Christ.
