So many of us are defeated before we even start out praying to God. The Accuser of the brethren has done a number on us causing us to be neutralised in prayer. God wants His children to ask of Him, believing that we receive the things we have asked for.
But through the voice of the accuser in our minds we do not pray with boldness but only half-heartedly because we really do not think God hears us.
I want to encourage you my friend…your Father in heaven does not keep an account of your sins. He keeps no record of wrongs done by you. Instead He has forgiven you all trespasses and purified your heart through the washing of the blood of Jesus. (1Cor 13:5; Col 2:13; Acts 15:9; Tit 3:5)
If I had considered evil in my heart
Psa 66:16 Come and hear, all you God-fearers, and I will tell what he has done for me.
Psa 66:17 I called to him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue.
Psa 66:18 If I had considered evil in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
Psa 66:19 However, God has listened; he has attended to the sound of my prayer.
Psa 66:20 Blessed be God, who has not turned aside my prayer, or his loyal love from me.
When we are not grounded in grace it is because we still listen to the accuser. The accuser works hand in hand with the law of God and any perversion of the law. What I mean by that is that he will throw condemnation and blame at you because you have not prayed for a few days….but there is no law that says I must pray every day. Yet the accuser makes everything a law to obey or to disobey. That is the realm he himself lives in.
Angels were created to obey law. But you were created to live by the inner life of Jesus…Who in turn lives by the life of the Father. The Law will condemn you my friend…that is it’s purpose. You will never walk in joy and peace with God while you have an eye on your performance, have I prayed today, have I given to the poor, have I tithed properly, have I witnessed to my friends this week, this month or this year?!
Such questioning comes out of a mind set on the flesh and not on Jesus. The Father took all that was against us or contrary to us as far as the Law is concerned and nailed those accusations to the cross of His son. God took all your trespasses into Himself in Jesus and they all died with Him on that day. All the charges that were against you…all the arrest warrants that were out for you have been canceled by the death of Jesus.
You died with Christ that day…and thus all charges against you were canceled! You cannot bring a dead man to court.
You were raised up to newness of life in Jesus-a new creation…a new man or woman. NOT so that you can start from scratch trying again to obey laws now that you have Jesus….NO, NO, NO!!
Most think that is what this salvation is all about. “Oh”..They reason….”I never could obey God’s law when I was an unbelieving sinner…but now that I am a believer and have the Holy Spirit I can obey God.”
God put that old stinking mind set to death in Jesus. You and I cannot obey God…and God is not asking or demanding that you try. If you try to obey laws then you set the law up as your judge again. You will fall short all the time. The accuser will condemn you. You will try harder or give up. You will view God as some unfair despot far away who asks too much of you. You will think that this Christianity is all too hard. Fear of going to Hell will dog your steps and keep you awake at night…Or you will just flip out and go back to your old ways of dealing with life.
You are a new creature in Christ not so that you still are responsible to do the right thing all the time for God with His help. Praying for God to help you to obey Him is not a prayer God will answer in the way you think. He will show you that He is with you, in you, and that is enough. He will show you Christ in you the hope of glory. No man shall boast in His presence—“I obeyed God!” Or, I did the right thing.
Jesus Himself said he could do nothing
Joh 5:19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
Joh 5:30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.
It is the Father who does the works, the living. We rest in Him. The Christian life is this mystery of Christ in us. Jesus life was that same mystery of God in Him. We are the vessel He fills. We are Temple He is the glory in that temple. We are one with Him in every way and just rest in Him.
All of this striving to be good Christians and striving to not do wrong sets up the old condemnation circuit. We live then by the power of fear and condemnation. We do everything out of fear of failing and disappointing God. This is gross unbelief.
We are forgiven, new creatures in Christ who are learning that we really have died and really are new creatures.
That old way of living(trying to be a Christian) points a bony finger at us and says, “You have an evil heart.” It says “Look at the things you have done lately…the things you say! Look at the things you have not done as well…how can you call yourself a Christian?!”
But my friend how can the one in whom Jesus lives have an evil heart? Jesus lives in you by faith. You are complete in Him. You do not have two hearts but only one new heart filled with Jesus. You do not have an old sin nature and a new nature—only a new nature. Who told you you had an old nature in you? The Accuser.
The Accuser of the brethren accuses us night and day before the throne of God.
Rev 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
God sits enthroned in your heart my brother or sister. And the Accuser comes before God’s throne—your heart — and points out your many failings according to the law of God. Yet all your sins are always carried in Jesus in Father into the wilderness as far as the east is from the west. Jesus is our scape goat who always is taking our sins away. We are clean before Father and no charges can stick. Satan has nothing in us to accuse.
The only thing he can achieve is for us to agree with him. When we think we have an evil heart…we fall short of the grace of God and bring ourselves back under Satan’s condemnation of us. In actual fact we do not have an evil heart for it was crucified long ago with Jesus…but to us it seems that we do still have it. As Paul wrote, having a mind set on the flesh will produce death in us.
Rom 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
We have the mind of Christ! And also we are in the Spirit, not in the flesh. Rom 8:9
So you see it is a matter of what story we will tell ourselves about ourselves. Will we agree with God’s story of us or will we consider the evil story of unbelief that the Devil tells us? God’s story is Jesus Christ. Satan’s story of us is – “You can obey God.”
The brother of sister who thinks he can obey God’s law is deceived by that old mindset and has yet to come to know His own death. Just keep trying to obey God a bit longer and deal with the condemnation and pretending that you must put on in order to walk before people. He who thinks himself to be something when he is nothing deceives himself. Only Jesus is something…and then even Jesus said he is nothing it is the Father who is really something.
You are a new creature – called to rest in Him- knowing that you yourself can do nothing.
There is no rest from this battle until we enter His rest
Heb 4:9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.
Heb 4:10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.
Heb 4:11 Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
To enter His rest presents a great dilemma for us. It is like a door in front of us with the sign REST upon it. To enter that door means we rest from our labours. This is where we must count the cost.
We stand there in our mind before that door promising rest….but the entry requirement is to give up any claim to being able to satisfy God.
The false self masquarades as a Christian and before that door he must bow. That door is Christ Jesus Himself…who Himself can do nothing but relies upon the Father. To enter REST we simply believe that we are fully already like God. To accept the finished work of Jesus is rest. To put on the Lord Jesus is rest.
To stand back from the door claiming in ourselves that we can obey God with HIs help is death and hypocrisy. It keeps us in the domain of the Devil who himself is deluded by his own grandeur. He lives in constant self condemnation accusing himself of failing God. His mind became man’s mind in the garden when our first father rejected being the likeness of God simply by birth.
We are born again, birthed into Jesus–into perfection! We are the image and likeness of God in Him! We cannot ever please God through the old man. No rest there.
Enter into His rest through faith in Jesus. He is your only life.
